#8180 Islamisation fears at top Pakistan university

Posted by Morfina on 16 January 2014 - 10:53 PM

Yep, that's why they need to enforce a short timely break for prayers, and discipline anyone who leaves before they should or doesn't return after the break is over. A 10 or 15 minute break won't be disruptive as long as it's planned--preferably in between periods, but if that's not possible, then the lecturer will plan it into their class to avoid the sort of situation you're talking about. Everyone will know that there's a short break from 1:20 to 1:35, for example. You can go pray, grab a snack, or do whatever. Just be back in time.

Case in point from my uni days (in the US, for those who don't know I'm US-based): I had an evening class once during Ramadan--there were 2 other Muslims in the class as well. We talked with the lecturer, and she was more than willing to accomodate us by having a planned short break during class. Everyone was happy to have a short break, and we got to break our fast araam say.

Yeah, we have 15 minute breaks in between classes and it works out fine. People are allowed to return to class if they run a little late, but they (we) stay in the back to avoid disturbing others.

#7971 Islamisation fears at top Pakistan university

daaaamn this article is exactly the kinda sh** my dad warned me about when I was younger, and this is an institution in which he has lectured before, don't think it was as bad 10+ years ago though. He used to fear that had I stayed in Pakistan I would have gotten caught up in this mullah drivel, and judging from the state of "Pakistan's best university" (doubt it), I can't help but think that he is very right. Given the location, I probably would have gone here too lol THANK THE LAWD pops had good foresight.

You're lucky your dad actually saw it as a problem, far too many don't.

LOL I thought you were in Canada (?) and that you were being sarcastic in your previous post!

Wish I could, but don't think I'm gonna be able to leave europe until I complete my education. However, travelling is definitely what I plan to spend my first salary on

#7123 Supporting the right to die always runs the risk of diminishing the right to...

Posted by Morfina on 02 January 2014 - 04:27 AM

Fully support the right of a person to die, and always will.

With an aging population this is going to become a huge debate in the coming years.

That's fine, but there's a difference between a person being able to communicate that they want to die and someone else making that decision for them.

I'm not necessarily saying it's the wrong decision though, just that it isn't a simple decision to make when you don't know with absolute certainty what the person in question would want.

"But in truth it's unclear whether that overwhelming urge to end his life was merciful towards Tom or towards Frances."

It's funny, someone I know is in a similar situation  and the doctors/care givers keep suggesting 'passive euthanasia' for their relative. The response they got when they disagreed was: "So is that what you think is best for you or for her?"
